Common Dreams: Flying | Dream Sleep Symbols

I dreamed that I could fly in the air, rose above the town below, and high into the night sky. It felt wonderful. I had no fear and could float gently down to earth whenever I wanted. Charles N- New York

Flying Dream – Psychological Meaning:

It usually feels completely natural as if we have somehow always known how to do this. Rarely is the dream accompanied by a fear of heights or of falling. Flying may symbolise liberation from something that’s been troubling you. The obstructions and shackles that have held you down have been released and you can now experience the same sense of freedom that we see in the birds that soar in the sky. The sky may symbolise consciousness and spirituality so to dream of flying can represent the expansion of your awareness and the unfolding of your higher self. (Freud of course took a more materialistic view: to him flying dreams represented sexual release.)

Nevertheless, flying also has its perils. The ancient Greek myth of Icarus warns us not to fly too high. Your dream may show that you are being over ambitious.

What is it I am being released from? Think about the things that have been troubling you of late. Perhaps the difficulty or emotional problem that has grounded you for so long is not as bad as you thought. Sometimes it is important to tread the paths of life lightly. Let the freedom, gentleness and carefree feeling of the dream be expressed in your behaviour.

Do I feel anxiety or fear? You may thrill at the feeling of risk that your dream gives you. If so, you may want to take more risks in your life with, for example, your work or a relationship. If you feel trepidation and alarm you may be over-reaching yourself and need to get a firmer footing in your life. Your dreams and ambitions may be too grandiose and not in accord with what you can realistically expect to achieve.

In ancient times, a person who dreamed of flying was considered to have entered the realm of the immortal gods. The Native Americans, the Babylonians, the Hindus, the Tibetan Buddhists and many other traditions claim that we all have a light body that can leave the physical body during sleep. The light body can travel great distances and even into other dimensions that mystics call the astral planes. Here we can talk to our friends who also travel the dimensions, communicate with the people of the spirit world, or learn from the advanced souls the men once called gods and angels. Many scientists believe that there is empirical proof that out of body travel is possible.

Freudian theory proven! Months of sexual frustration solved yesterday, immediately followed by a very intense, pleasurable, dream of flying…fully in control, no obstacles.

I usually fly very high up over threes and villages long ways. There are also dreams where I fly low, over green grass whit high speed. Speed can mean danger. If i feel tired of walking in dreams I just can lay me down like strating to swim, but in the air. In those dreams i fly 1 meters high beside the road. I always managed to get higer up if I wanted, also in the room inside. Feeling powerfull.

I have this reoccurring dream. I dream that I can fly by flapping my arms. I can fly around a room and look down to the amazement of people below me.

I fly in my dreams ever since I was a child. I’m an adult now and can still fly all the time. I feel happy and not stressed and I usually fly over an ocean or to a high tree. I also suffer from sleep paralysis and have been attacked. I try to fly to get away from that evil presence but I can’t. I believe in God and read scriptures but I just can’t get over things.

I have dreamed i left my body and rise above my childhood home at a very young age. I would fly ove all the cities at night and see all the beautiful lights the waters reflecting the moon. As I got older it stopped, regretfully. As an adult I have had visons that came to pass. If this is related Im unsure.

My dream is slightly different but I have this dream very often. It is a combination of being able to fly and some sort of reduced gravity experience, as if I determine whether I want to go all the way up in the air or just show off my tricks by rising into the air and doing flips. Others seem to be amazed by my ability to fly and it feels so liberating and joyful.

I have the same dream that you described. I find myself flying around malls, buildings, outside ,etc. Initially, I couldn’t control myself, however as time passed, I found the ability to simply float, and change speeds as I choose. Now I fly over walking during the dreams. What does the flying mean ?
