Relationships and Sexual Dreams
Dreams help us to deal with and heal many of the emotional feelings to do with our relationships with others. Sometimes emotions are expressed in an exaggerated way in order to give expression to repressed feelings that would be inappropriate to express in normal social situations. Dreams can expose our true feelings and relationship with other people and also give ways to give better expression to our true feelings.

Psychological Dream Meaning: This dream may express your unconscious emotions of being forsaken. Examine the reasons for this feeling. Do you feel that people emotionally neglect you? Perhaps you harbour feelings of resentment such as an unresolved problem from childhood? The dream also may be saying how you need to express your feelings and be understood by others. On another level, the dream may say that you need guidance with some life issue. For example, you hope for an 'authority figure' to help you take control of your life. Many people have this dream after the death of a loved one. Grief brings a strange mixture of emotions: anger, resentment, depression, panic and abandonment. These feelings are all part of the healing process.
Mystical Interpretation: To abandon something unpleasant indicated good financial news ahead. But the omens are bad if you abandon someone or something you cherish - destiny sees troubled times. However, if you are the one abandoned then reconciliation will happen quickly. Top

Psychological Dream Meaning: The Anima is the feminine principle in the male psyche. It is often symbolised by a beautiful young woman. She may leave the dreamer determined that he must embark on a heroic quest to meet her again. The dreamer may mistakenly look for the ‘girl of his dreams’ in the outside world but in reality the dream points to the motivation to discover the feminine part of himself. The integration of both the masculine and feminine sides of our nature leads to psychological health and wholeness. Similarly, the Animus is the masculine principle in the female psyche. A woman may dream of it in the guise of a beautiful young man or a hero figure.
The anima (the feminine principle in a man) can also take a negative role. Instead of providing spiritual inspiration and a more balanced view of life, it can appear in dreams as moody, irritable and oversensitive. If the ‘woman of your dreams’ is like this then this may signal that these destructive characteristics are dominating your personality.
Similarly, the animus (the masculine principle in a woman) can also be a destructive force. According to Jung a negative animus causes a woman to be opinionated, argumentative, rigid, controlling and excessively critical of herself and others. Jung believed that everyone should strive to find a proper balance between the positive qualities associated with both the anima and animus and integrate these into the personality.
Mystical Interpretation: The wisdom of yore says that to dream of a young man or woman is a sign that there will be a reconciliation of family disagreements. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: If you dream of being tied up it may indicate that aspects of your psychological life are being too tightly controlled. You may be restricting your need for self-expression or feel that you are a prisoner of your circumstances. You may have hidden potentials that you refuse to acknowledge or be repressing your true feelings. Perhaps the dream shows how you are held captive by the banal and commonplace and have a need for the inner freedom that comes with spirituality. You want to set yourself free. You may also fear that a forthcoming event, such as a marriage, new job or the birth of a child, will curtail your freedom.
The dream may also show how you try to dominate others. Do you try to dominate or emotionally smother your kith and kin? Some people like to dominate others by placing them under an obligation to secure their dependency or indebtedness. This controlling attitude will never bring happiness.
Bondage of course also has erotic overtones. Freud believed that dreams of bondage are an allegory for repressed sexual fantasies. These he says date back to childhood when our parents dominated us. Alternatively, it could symbolise your desire to be more sexually submissive or illustrate the fact that you have unacknowledged sexual passions.
Mystical Interpretation: To dream of being tied up means that, contrary to your better judgement, you will yield to love. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: You may have fears that you have lost your virility or feel under some form of sexual pressure.
Mystical Interpretation: The myth of Saturn castrating his father may represent the fear of maturity and the conflicting desire to supplant the father. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: Some psychologists believe that we dream in order to allow our emotions to settle down. Without dreams, we would simply overheat. Dreams can sometimes express very powerful emotions that we would not dare express in everyday life. They can act as an emotional safety valve to help us release tension. Jung pointed out that emotions come from the ‘Shadow’ which is the undeveloped, ‘inferior’ functions of the psyche. Many people will refuse to recognise these emotions as their own and project them onto someone else.
Mystical Interpretation: Some superstitions say to reverse the emotional meaning of the dream. For example, if you dream of being angry or crying it means that you will soon hear some good news. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: If you dream of missing a train, being unable to read an important message, searching in vain for something or failing to convince someone of the truth of an argument, then your dream is expressing deep-set frustrations. You may be concerned that your life is not going in the direction you want or may feel a repressed anger at the stubbornness of the people in your life. It is important that you discover why you feel so frustrated so that you can deal more effectively with its causes.
Mystical Interpretation: Dream superstition takes frustrations to mean the opposite- all your plans will succeed.
Psychological Dream Meaning: If the dream relates to real-life events then you may consider seeking professional advice or counselling. For a man, to dream of incest with a daughter symbolically expresses a fear of secret erotic desires. Incest with a sister or brother can represent the union of masculine and feminine sides of the dreamer. For a man, to dream of incest with his mother represents the desire he may have had for her as a small boy (see Mother) and likewise a woman’s dreams of incest with her father represent her infantile desires. (see Father)
Mystical Interpretation: The subject was so taboo that ancient dream books made no comment about these dreams. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: These are probably feelings that you have carried forward from your waking life. Your dream may be revealing covetous feelings that you were previously unaware of having. Similarly, you may have unconsciously recognised jealousy from your family friends or colleagues. Your dream may be warning you.
Mystical Interpretation: Dream oracles warn of narrow-minded people and the clandestine influence of enemies. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: This could be a straightforward sexual dream. However, a kiss is also a symbol of love and affection so may represent those things you hold dear. Perhaps there are other connotations: the kiss of life, the kiss of death or the kiss of betrayal. The dream highlights the feelings that you have a ‘closeness’ with at the moment
Mystical Interpretation: The gypsies believe that to dream of exchanging a kiss means that a quarrel will be over soon. Top
Naked (see also Nudity)
Psychological Dream Meaning: To dream of being naked may indicate that you feel vulnerable and exposed. You may feel that you are unable to maintain your defences against the outside world.
Mystical Interpretation: This dream can mean innocence or if you are a traditional Christian, it can refer to the Final Judgement. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: Dreams often express sexual feelings that society would never permit in reality. Sometimes these instincts are repressed or pushed out of conscious awareness. In dreams, our primal instincts and desires (the id) try to communicate with the conscious ego. Freud tells us that this communication is censored by the super-ego, our moral principle. The result is that the sexual messages from the unconscious come through to the conscious mind in the disguised form of symbols. Phallus symbols can include anything long and straight that may resemble the male penis.
Mystical Interpretation: To many races and tribes, the phallus is their primary symbol of worship. Ancient cave paintings of the human reproductive organs have been found in countries as far apart as Senegal and Niger, Australia, France, China, Japan and India. It is proof of the power of this symbol. For example, the Romans used phallic charms to ward off evil spirits and their god Priapus was depicted as a huge phallus with a human face. The Toltecs and Aztecs from Mexico worshiped a winged snake and the Hindus still worship Shiva as a phallic emblem. The favourite god in Chinese homes is Shou-lao, the god of longevity. He is normally depicted with an enormous bald head that resembles a phallus. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: For a man this may be a sadistic expression of sexual desire. It may show feelings of vengeance towards the opposite sex. For a woman this dream may represent fears of sex or masochistic fantasies.
Mystical Interpretation: Even the Victorian dream books cover this topic. Superstition claims that if a woman dreams of rape her pride will be wounded. You will hear shocking news if you dream that a friend is raped. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: The people that appear in our dreams, and particularly strangers, usually represent facets of ourselves. It may be shocking to see the truth about ourselves that is projected into the characters of the dream. Our relationships with these people illustrates how much we are in harmony with ourselves and demonstrates which parts of the personality we allow to ‘take the stage’. For example, if a man dreams of very feminine women, this may show a need to accept the feminine side of his nature. Similarly, a woman who dreams of assertive men may herself need to act in a more masculine way. And of course, the dream could be talking about real life scenarios and the true or repressed feelings you have for the people you know in reality.
Mystical Interpretation: Dream superstition says that the way people act towards you in a dream predicts events to come. If they are friendly, expect happy events to follow. If they are downright nasty take precautions against potential disaster. Top
Psychological Dream Meaning: Erotic dreams are usually a straightforward expression of sexual desire. The nature of the sex may reveal you hidden hopes and fears. For example, if you dream of having sex with someone other than your partner, this may highlight dissatisfaction with the physical side of your relationship. Your dreams may reveal patterns in your sexual relationships that you may not be aware of. If your sexual dreams are violent or perverse, you may need to be more relaxed about your sexuality. You may have sexual phobias or compulsions that need to be recognised and brought in control. Your dreams may offer ways to help you lead a happier and more natural sexual life.
Mystical Meaning: An odd superstition claims that if a man or woman dream of visiting a brothel there will be an improvement to their domestic life. And good news for cross dressers: there will be success within the family if you dream of changing sex. Top
UNDRESSED IN PUBLIC
I dreamed of forgetting to wear my clothes to work. It was highly embarrassing- everybody laughed at me! T H- Glasgow Scotland.
This is a well-known anxiety dream. Dreams like this are sometimes interpreted as a fear of sexual relationships. Alternatively, it can signify the "naked truth" about yourself. Perhaps, you fear failure or that you will make mistakes and be ridiculed? In your waking life, you need to overcome your feelings of vulnerability and learn self-confidence. Being partly dressed may symbolise that you are not prepared for what lies ahead. Thoroughly examine your plans and perfect them.
Freud believed that to dream of being naked is an unconscious wish for the free unclothed periods of early life. Most psychologists consider that dreams of nudity highlight feelings of vulnerability. The dreamer may be conscious of their faults and failings
1. How do I feel about my nudity? An anxious feeling may symbolise the vulnerability mentioned above but equally a feeling of approval may symbolise your pleasure at being free of inhibitions. You may be expressing your openness and honesty.
2. How do people in my dream react to my nudity? If they mock you then you may be harbouring feelings of guilt and a fear of revealing your feelings. You could have a fear of sexual relationships. Indifference may suggest that something you are concerned about revealing is not really very important. Approval suggests a shedding of inhibitions.
Mystical Interpretation: Dream oracles tell us that to dream of undressing means you will make a grave mistake in your business affairs unless you listen to advice. Top
