Baby

Psychological Dream Meaning: The baby may represent something new in your life. Does it cry for attention or do you feel content with this new situation? A baby can also symbolise your own inner nature that is pure and uncorrupted. It may even say that you are innocent of an accusation. Also it could show the vulnerable part of yourself that has to be protected or perhaps you are nurturing some new ideas or feelings. New Age gurus speak of 'loving the magical child within'  they advise us to express the innocent care-free side of ourselves. Your dream may be telling you to follow this advice. On a superficial level, to dream of a baby may show that your maternal instincts are seeking expression- you may simple wish for a child.

Mystical Interpretation: Surprisingly most old dream books believe that dreaming of babies has nothing to do with prophecies of pregnancy. For example, if a woman dreams she is nursing a baby she will be deceived by someone she trusts. Top

Pregnancy Dream Meaning

Back

Psychological Dream Meaning: The back area of the body, the back of an object, a stage or a building symbolises parts of yourself that are hidden from view. The back may also represent secrets that you keep from other people or aspects of your personality that you would prefer not to think about. If the dream gives you a feeling of unease then these hidden traits may have negative characteristics. You may  pushed away feelings of guilt, shame, fear or self-disgust.

Mystical Interpretation: Traditionally, evil is said to stand behind us. The preacher may say ‘Get thee behind me Satan’ or if we spill salt we remedy the bad luck by throwing a little over our left shoulder and into the eye of the devil. Similarly, your dream may point to an aspect of your life that is now over, a situation that you have  ‘put behind you’. Maybe your dream contains other puns: Is someone ‘getting your back up’ or perhaps you feel that you need a ‘pat on the back’. Top

Backwards

Psychological Dream Meaning: To dream of walking backwards or moving backwards means that you are taking retrograde steps in your life. What you seek from life appears to be moving away from you. You may have a feeling of failure and inability to achieve the goals and aspirations. Alternatively, the dream may be telling you that the best policy is to retreat at this time. Why exhaust yourself in a fruitless struggle?  Rest and gather your strength so that you can try again later with renewed vigour and self-confidence.

Mystical Interpretation: Some tribal societies believe that evil spirits can be thwarted by dramatically changing our routines. Walking backwards is one way to confuse the demons that bring bad luck. To dream of walking backwards therefore indicates that better luck is on it’s way.  Top

Bag

Psychological Dream Meaning: The bag represents the psychological qualities you carry through life. For example, if the bag is full of junk then this may represent the wrong attitudes and worries that burden yourself with. In this case your problems are of your own making and you may consider ways to unload your problems. Perhaps you can lighten your load by adopting a cheerful attitude? Similarly the bag may represent responsibility and the dream is saying that you share this burden you carry. If the bag is filled with food or items of value then the dream may be showing how you are gathering ideas or new knowledge in your waking life.

Mystical Interpretation: Dream superstition says that dreams of paper bags forecast financial bad luck, cloth bags bring business success and leather forecasts an unexpected journey. The heavier the bag, the more success you’ll have. Top

Baking

Psychological Dream Meaning: This dream can represent plans that you are nearly ready to put into action. You should soon benefit for bread represents the qualities of nourishment and wholesomeness. This dream can also represent pregnancy. The oven is the womb and the bread is the growing child. But don’t rush off to buy a cot and baby booties just yet: the dream is most likely to be a metaphor rather than a prediction of an actual birth. It may be showing the development of a new idea or a period of spiritual development.

Mystical Interpretation: To dream of baking brings good luck say the old superstitions. Unfortunately this dream prophesy only applies to men. Top

Baldness

Psychological Dream Meaning: If you dream of losing your hair you may be worried about your self-image and how others perceive you. You may feel insecure and anxious. You may also feel that you do not have the power to succeed in an undertaking and may be unconsciously reminded of how Samson lost his strength when his hair was cut. You may also harbour fears of increasing age or a lack of virility. If you are loosing your hair in real life then this dream is expressing your anxieties about your hair loss. For goodness sake, stop being so vain.

Mystical Interpretation: European and American cultures believe that to dream of being bald is a sign that you will soon have a financial loss. However, this superstition is reversed for the Batoro tribe who live between Lakes Albert and Edward in east Africa. Fertility and prosperity is guaranteed the Batoro bride only if every hair on her head and body is shaved before she marries. The girl is then covered with copious quantities of oil. To dream of being bald is therefore an auspicious sign. Top

Balloon

Psychological Dream Meaning: If the balloon flies freely in the sky then this dream may be expressing your desire for freedom or to escape from an oppressive situation. You desire to rise above the conflicts of daily life. Festive balloons can also represent a celebration of some kind or a personal achievement.  However, the dream can also have a negative connotation: do you have an inflated opinion of yourself? Be careful for a balloon full of wind can easily go pop- and so can your ego.

Mystical Interpretation: Traditional interpretations say that to dream of travelling in a hot air balloon warns of an unfortunate journey. Alternatively, it may indicate that you can see the way ahead. Look at the landscape. Does it represent the landscape and pathways of your future? Top

Bank

Psychological Dream Meaning: A bank, and particularly the vault, represent your inner storehouse of psychological potential. You have inner reserves of skills and energy that you should start to use. It’s no good locking your talents away. Your unconscious is telling you to start using them now. Of course the dream symbolism may be more literal than this: the dream may show your practical needs for financial security. You are being shown that your circumstances are more financially secure than you fear. However, if you dream of robbing a bank then this may show that you are expending too much energy and that there’s a danger that you will deplete you inner resources.

Mystical Interpretation: If you dream of putting money into the bank it means money’s coming your way but if you dream that the coffers are empty it forecasts financial doom. Top

Baptism

Psychological Dream Meaning: The baby (or adult) being baptised is you. The next stage in your life, your plans and hopes, are being blessed by your higher self. You are being reborn into something new or better. The baby may represent a new way of being, a new attitude to life or a new approach to others. Immersion in water represents death and emergence from the water represents resurrection to new life. The old ‘negative you’ has died and it is likely that this ‘new you’ will be successful. Your new attitude will bring positive things to you. The dream may also be of a spiritual nature. Your faith in God has been renewed and you are coming closer to self-realisation and spiritual fulfilment.

Mystical Interpretation: It is claimed that if you dream of drinking water from a baptism you will be a great and famous singer. Top

Bat

Psychological Dream Meaning: Bats were considered by the early Christians to be ‘birds of the Devil’ because of their association with darkness and their similarity to rats. They share the sexual lust of the Devil. (The devil is a corruption of the cloven footed god Pan who played his pipes in celebration of nature and sexuality.) In particular, vampire bats, that take human form in Dracula by Bram Stoker, represent predatory sexuality for it is only from the virgin’s blood that they can drink. Maurice Richardson in his book Psychoanalysis of Ghost Stories tells us that Dracula, with his dark heroism and superhuman image, has an unconscious erotic appeal for women. He argues that the story only makes sense when analysed from a Freudian standpoint.  Alternatively, a vampire bat may represent a person in your life who is depleting you of self-confidence or resources.

Mystical Interpretation: To dream of one of these universally loathed creatures is a portent of disaster. They are considered to be an omen of death and injury. Because of their blindness they are also considered to be a prophecy that warns of danger to the eyes. Fortunately superstition also has an antidote for these terrible dreams: simply carry a bat’s bone in your pocket and you’ll come to no harm. Similarly, in parts of Europe they believe that a bat’s right eye carried in a waistcoat pocket will make you invisible. Top

Bath

Psychological Dream Meaning: Bathing represents a psychological cleansing process. You are trying to get rid of old attitudes. Water can symbolise your emotional nature. You  may be trying to cleanse yourself of negativity. Perhaps you have feelings of guilt or feel uncomfortable with your feelings. You may feel that your natural sexual feelings are ‘dirty thoughts’. It has also been suggested that a bath symbolises the waters of the womb and a person’s desire to escape back to the security of the amniotic waters.

Mystical Interpretation: It was once believed that the act of washing cleansed a person not only of the dirt from the body but also of the sins from the heart. But to dream of bathing is a mixed blessing for in many countries it is considered to also wash away your good luck. Top

Beard

Psychological Dream Meaning: A beard symbolises the primitive man within you- the untamed, sexual side of yourself. According To Freud, a man who dreams of having his beard cut fears castration- a symbol of loss of sexual confidence. If a woman dreams of growing a beard it may show a desire to play a man’s role i.e. to have a more powerful job or be assertive. Long beards are associated with old age and wisdom. A wizened old man with a long grey beard represents the insight that comes from the unconscious. It is your own higher self that can guide you to greater knowledge and understanding.

Mystical Interpretation: An Arab will not thank you if you pull his beard for this is considered a terrible insult. Wars have been waged over lesser sins. Similarly in Europe and America to dream of a beard  signifies a fierce battle ahead. Top

Bereavement (see Death)

Bird

Psychological Dream Meaning: Because of their ability to fly birds universally represent spirituality. The sky is the unfettered realm of the spirit and, like the winged gods of old, the bird shows how some process within your psyche is bringing you wholeness, healing and balance. Birds are the soul’s desire for transcendence. They may also show your desire to escape from something you consider to be banal and commonplace. You may want to be free of a situation and have a desire to take wing. Or is it a habitual attachment or negative attitude that you want to rise above? In mythology birds are often messengers from the gods. In psychological terms this may show that the unconscious is offering you new insight and solutions to your problems. To dream of freeing a bird from captivity relates to releasing your own emotions or primal energies.

Birds can also symbolise aspects of relationships. Thieving birds, such as magpies, may suggest a threat to a relationship or adultery. Territorial birds, such as blackbirds, can represent jealousy. According to Freud birds are sexual symbols that represent the male penis. Many people still call attractive young women ‘birds’. Finally, a flock of birds may represent your need to be one of a group that you admire and identify with.

Mystical Interpretation: For centuries it has been considered a good omen to dream of birds. Here’s a few of the most common superstitions: Albatross: good luck coming. Buzzard: beware of gossip. Cock: if it crows you will receive good news soon. Dove: a peaceful solution to your problems will be found. Eagle: business success. Geese: improvements ahead. Hawk: a bright future awaits you. Magpie: a change of plan in matters of the heart. Owl: beware of disappointment. Stork: family problems are imminent. Turkey: bad luck unless you dream of killing or eating it. Top

Birth

Psychological Dream Meaning: For a woman dreams about birth may simply reflect your thoughts and feelings about being a mother. As a symbol it can represent the possibility of a new beginning or a new period of personal growth. We use the same imagery in our everyday language i.e. ‘giving birth to a new idea’ or we may call a project ‘your baby’. Sometimes bringing something new into your life can be a painful process.

For Carl Jung dreams about birth were important because they represented a stage in the ‘individuation’ process. Put simply, this is the growth of the human psyche to maturation and wholeness. Birth therefore represents the start of an important new phase in your life and personal psychological development.

Mystical Interpretation: To dream of giving birth brings good luck if your married but troubles for single women. Top

Bite

(see also Food)

Psychological Dream Meaning: Young children sometimes bite in order to express aggressiveness. You may have unexpressed, perhaps childish, feelings of anger or resentment that need to be recognised and perhaps expressed. If you are the one being bitten this may illustrate how you feel pestered by a problem or difficulty. If an animal bites you, consider what aspect of your instinctive nature it represents. The dream may also point to an outer problem. For example being bitten by a shark may be a pun to say something like ‘be careful of that loan shark’.

Mystical Interpretation: To dream of biting means you will suffer a loss because of an enemy- or so they say. Top

Black (see Colours)

Blind

Psychological Dream Meaning: If you dream of being blind this may represent your refusal to see the truth. Perhaps you reject something about yourself or your situation. Do you feel that you have lost your sense of direction in waking life? Or are you so bigoted in your opinions that you refuse to see any other point of view except your own? Perhaps your religious experiences are one of ‘blind faith’ rather than tolerance and spiritual inquiry? Truth frees us from the painful bondage of ignorance. Open your eyes!

Mystical Interpretation: In mythology Wotan sacrificed an eye in order to get the runes. Similarly the visionary Tiresias in Ancient Greece was blind. Blindness as a mystical dream symbol represents swapping outer vision for inner vision. The dream may therefore represents wisdom and self-knowledge

Blood

Psychological Dream Meaning: Blood is a symbol of life. If you dream of loosing blood then you may be suffering from exhaustion or feel emotionally drained by a situation. Blood can also symbolise passion, especially love, anger or even violence. Women sometimes dream of blood at the start of their menstruation.

Mystical Interpretation: In many ancient rituals the participants would drink the blood of the sacrificial animal. This represented sharing in the power and strength of the gods. Similarly, to dream of drinking blood may be a grizzly symbol for receiving new vitality. Top
